You dont need to even collect them if you dont spend them. Spend the ressources the workers collect. There are aggressive strategies off of one base or 2 bases, but these still require you to properly make workers up to a certain point, otherwise your economy will be too bad even for aggressive play. Make workers, as many as you can, with no interruptions (well, up to maybe 70 or so).
and more stuff usually wins (youd be surprised HOW MUCH more stuff one can actually have). While playing you have to keep in mind that the basic idea of the game is the same for all races: Better economy wins, because better economy can afford more stuff. You obviously dont know your playstyle yet because you are new, so I guess you coul go ahead and play each race until you hit level 50 with that specific race (just as an example approach). The answer is: The race that suits your playstyle best.
I do not know if this is a serious question or not (beacuse balance is a hot topic in this place :D).
